Damage limitation for Simon at Mugello

 In Moto2, News

Mugello is notorious for its slipstreaming potential, but the 2010 Italian Grand Prix needed none for the Moto2 winner. Andrea Iannone took the only home victory of the day in Tuscany, escaping from the start and leaving his rivals chasing shadows. The podium fight was more open, but times were generally down on those set in practice on Friday and Saturday. Once again there were crashes galore, with ten riders hitting the deck. Another interesting race for the new intermediate world championship category.

Mapfre Aspar rider Julián Simón started well but made an error when changing gears, leaving him with a lot to do if he was to acheive his goal of a pódium finish. He had dropped as low as fifteenth, but managed to pull back to ninth on lap seven. The fight in the trailing pack slowed him down and allowed the lead pack –and the podium- to get away from the Spaniard.

9th Julián Simón: “I made a mistake on the opening laps, skipping a gear and letting lots of riders get past me. From then on it was just a case of pushing as best I could. In the warmup we made the bike a bit smoother to ride, and I was comfortable on it when making what was a relatively simple comeback. However, when I reached Alex Debón we both slowed each other down, allowing the group ahead of us to escape. I thought that if I got amongst them I would be in the podium fight, but it wasn’t to be. I hope that we can continue improving the bike for Silverstone and repeat the Le Mans podium.”
