Good things come to those who wait: Better weather conditions on second day of testing

With blue skies finally appearing over the Circuito de Jerez, Marc Marquez got his first taste of Moto2 while Scott Redding went to hospital following a crash

Official Suter test rider Damien Cudlin was the first to go out at just after 10:30 local time. The Australian did 48 laps on the Suter MVDS MotoGP bike, with a best time of 1’45.5. Carmelo Morales, fresh from winning the CEV Moto2 championship, also tested for Suter Racing, doing 15 laps in the afternoon.

Keen to get as much time as possible on his new Moto2 bike, Xavi Fores was the second to go out, recording a best time of 1’45.0 in 68 laps. His Mapfre Aspar team-mate Julian Simon, riding a 2011 spec Suter chassis, did 60 laps, with a best time of 1’43.8, the joint fastest Moto2 time of the day, with the Interwetten Moto team’s Tom Luthi.

With wet conditions yesterday and more rain forecast for tomorrow the teams were keen to make the most of a sunny day and with the track drying quickly, all riders were out by early afternoon.

Riding a 2010 spec Suter chassis, Marc Marquez finally got his first laps on a Moto2 bike after the Monlau Competicion team decided not to risk the conditions yesterday. The recently crowned 125cc World Champion pitted out for the first time around 12:30 local time in front of a crowd of photographers. Marquez did 46 laps in total, recording a best time of 1’45.9.

Other riders doing their first laps today were Aeroport Castello’s Kev Coghlan -the young Scot recorded 51 laps with a best time of 1’46.5, Alex Baldolini, who has now officially signed for the Forward Racing team and Tenerife 40 Pons duo Aleix Espargaro and Axel Pons who got best laps of 1’44.6 and 1’44.7 laps respectively.

Scott Redding’s crash just after 15:00 saw the track closed for nearly 15 minutes. The Marc VDS rider hit the grass exiting the final turn and highsided. He was taken to hospital for a precautionary check up and did not return to the track. He recorded a best time of 1’44.65 in 36 laps on the Moto2 bike and hopes to be fit enough to ride a few laps on the Suter MVDS MotoGP bike tomorrow. His Marc VDS team-mate, Mika Kallio, did 61 laps with a best time of 1’46.0.
