Strong performance from Xavi Vierge to finish eighth at Jerez, Jake Dixon crashes

It was a day of ups and downs for the PETRONAS Sprinta Racing Moto2 riders Xavi Vierge and Jake Dixon. After experiencing difficulties all weekend, Xavi put in a strong performance to cross the line eighth at the Andalucia GP, his best result of the season. Unfortunately team-mate Dixon failed to finish the race after crashing on the third lap.

A strong start from Vierge saw him immediately making gains on the first lap, moving rapidly into the top-ten. The Spaniard got his head down and pushed hard around the 4.4km long circuit, moving steadily through the field throughout the race. Despite aiming for higher, Vierge was able to cross the line eighth and secure some solid points for the team. He now sits ninth in the World Championship standings.

Unfortunately Jake didn’t have a chance to make progress through the field in today’s Moto2 race around the Circuito de Jerez – Angel Nieto. For the second race in a row, the Brit made a lightning quick start and was able to work his way through the field before reaching the first corner. However, Dixon found himself swamped in the pack in the opening corners and struggled to find the best lines. After running off line on the third lap, he tucked the front of the bike in Turn 6, which saw his race come to a disappointing and early conclusion.

The pair will now turn their attention to the next race, which will be held in the Czech Republic at Automotodrom Brno in a couple of weeks time (7-9 August).

Xavi Vierge:

At the end of the day we are here to fight for podiums, so the result isn’t what we wanted. It’s been a hard couple of races and we’ve been working a lot of things, which means that we have a lot of data to prepare a new plan for Brno. The most important thing is that with three difficult weekends we have come away with a good collection of points. Still not where we want to be in an ideal world, but we’re not that far off in the championship standings. It’s a new team for me this year, so we have only been working together for three races but everyone is working hard. We now need to understand which is the best direction for us and go to Brno stronger than we were here.

Jake Dixon:

It’s been difficult for the past two weeks. Jerez seems to be a track that I’m really not getting on with, even from testing. It’s not ideal as ultimately you need to be fast everywhere. In the race I got a good start off the line but then got boxed in going into Turn 1 and Turn 2. I was then pushed out in Turn 3, which lost me positions. I started to recover some of those positions but then going into Turn 6 I was a little off line and tucked the front of the bike. I felt like we could have had a good race, but because I crashed it means nothing. We’ll regroup and come back stronger in Brno.
