Aron Canet and the Openbank Aspar Team’s dream in the Grand Prix of Styria has finished in the second lap of the Moto2 race, when the rookie crashed while riding in second position. Canet, who yesterday achieved his first pole position in the category, had also been first in the morning warm-up session and had a great race pace. He was second in the first corner, competing with Jorge Martín for the lead. However, on the second lap, when he reached the fourth corner of the Red Bull Ring, he has crashed and has not been able to continue fighting for his best result of the season.

His teammate in this GP, Alejandro Medina, completed the race with good feelings in his first experience with the Speed Up. Medina, rider of the Openbank Aspar Team in the MotoE category, replaced Hafizh Syahrin due to the injury of the Malaysian. The Andalusian started from the twenty-ninth position on the grid and has been able to recover up to seven positions in the race. The next challenge for both Canet and Medina will be the San Marino Grand Prix, on the weekend of September, 13 at the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli. Luca Marini will arrive there as leader after being seventh today in Austria, followed by Enea Bastianini and Jorge Martín. The Spanish rider crossed the line today in first position but, due to a penalty, was finally second and left the victory to Marco Bezzecchi.

Alejandro Medina:

“I’m happy with the times, it’s not a good result, but I was less than two seconds away from the best lap time of the winner. We have gained a lot of experience, even in a weekend in which we have not been completely comfortable, and we have worked a lot. We have taken a step forward and I want to thank the team for how they have welcomed me these days and for everything that have done to help me.”

Aron Canet:

“I’m disappointed, I made a big mistake when braking and I crashed. I’m sad, I saw the potential to fight for victory because I was strong. I have the good taste of my first pole position and the satisfaction of seeing that I could follow Martín and, in some corners, I was even stronger. In the crash, I felt pain in my knee and foot, and I preferred not to move anything and to be taken out with a stretcher. I have gone to the medical centre and we have ruled out major injuries.”
