11th for Canet on his return, crash for Syahrin in European GP

In a new script twist typical of 2020, Sam Lowes has handed over the intermediate class lead to Enea Bastianini after a mistake that ended a three-race winning streak. The Briton was second behind Marco Bezzecchi when he went to the ground and saw his advantage in front of the World Championship disappear. He came to Valencia with seven points more than the Italian and he is now chasing Bastianini, six points behind. And that was not a great day for the Italian, after starting from the middle of the grid he was only able to be fourth, behind Jorge Martín and Remy Gardner. With these results, Enea Bastianini already has 184 points, by Lowes’ 178, Marini’s 165 and today’s winner, Bezzecchi, 155. The four remain as candidates for a title that Bastianini himself could close next week in Cheste.

Aron Canet has got an eleventh position on his return to competition in Valencia, four weeks after the crash in the warm-up session of the French Grand Prix in which he injured the little finger on his left hand. The Moto2 rookie continues with a firm step in his fight for the title of “Rookie of the Year”, in which he leads his closest rival by 23 points. Canet has recovered ground with respect to the starting position in the European Grand Prix and was already fourteenth on his first lap. The Valencian has continued to push until he has placed in ninth, but in the second half of the race that trend has slowed. With this result, Canet climbs three places in the general standings and is eleventh. His teammate Hafizh Syahrin could not close the grand prix with another joy as he fell on the second lap, at the last corner of the circuit. The Malaysian rider lost the front end of his bike and was unable to avoid the crash as he was fighting to get inside the points zone.

Aron Canet:

“I am relatively happy with today’s race. At the beginning the pace was very good, but since lap 15 or so the pace has dropped and I didn’t have the same feeling on the tyre. We finished in eleventh position, which is not bad at all after not getting on the bike for so long. We will try to improve next week.”

Hafizh Syahrin:

“The crash was a shame because I felt very good on the bike. I was trying to figure out how to make the front end work better when, in the last corner, I lost it. I tried to save the crash, but maybe as it was downhill and I was going quite fast I could not. This sometimes happens. We have a good feeling with the bike, we just need to keep working for next weekend.”
