After achieving a second place at the last GP in Montmelo, Viñales was convinced he’d be able to continue to fight for the top positions in Assen.

During the first of the free practice sessions this morning, the current Moto3 world champion displayed a great performance and finished sixth with just two tenths behind the fastest, German rider Jonas Folger.

For the afternoon session, Maverick and the team made a couple of changes to the setting of his Kalex, which didn’t work out well, and he couldn’t improve on his time from the morning. This put him in twelfth place at the end of day 1.

His teammate in the Páginas Amarillas HP 40 team, Luis Salom, travelled to the cathedral of motorcycle racing still recovering from the fracture he suffered in his right hand during the last GP. Salom rode through the pain and finished the day with a deserved tenth place, with a gap of six tenths to the quickest rider.

Despite not having been able to set a fast lap, I’m very happy with the work we’ve done today. The finger is giving me grief, mostly at the beginning of the session, once it warms up I notice it less. To be honest, I think after the crash in Barcelona I have to be happy to have arrived here in the condition that I did.

Maverick Viñales – 1.38.602
During the first session of the day I felt very comfortable on the bike. I had a problem that we wanted to solve for the afternoon, but overall it went quite well. For the afternoon we made some changes but I didn’t feel right on the bike. We’ve got a clear idea of where we need to go with this tomorrow and at the moment we’re working in the garage to find the setting which will make me feel comfortable again.
