Axel Pons

Number: 49
Place of birth: Barcelona
Date of birth: 09/Apr/1991
Weight: 73Kg.
Height: 182cm.

Son of double 250cc World Champion Sito Pons, Axel Pons is a new addition to the quarter-litre class grid in 2009. Pons debuted in 2008 with wildcard rides at Jerez, Estoril and Barcelona in the 125cc category, under the watchful eye of his father in the Jack&Jones WRB team. The young talent has learned his trade in the Spanish national championship (CEV Buckler) and in Catalan championship races during his formative years and impressed enough to be given an opportunity in Grand Prix racing.

However, bad luck told the story of his 2008 campaign, unable to finish in two of his GP guest appearances and out of the points at the other due to crashes and technical problems. More significantly, Pons was forced to bravely fight his way back to fitness over the summer of 2008 following a horrific crash in a CEV race in Jerez in June, which resulted in several fractured bones, including two broken legs, followed by several weeks of intense hospital treatment.

He showed great character to return to competitive riding before the 2008 season concluded, reappearing in the Spanish championship, before it was announced that he would make the leap into the 250cc World Championship in 2009, in a newly formed Pepe World Pons WRB team which also featured Hector Barbera, where he finished 26th overall.

In 2010 he made the step up to the new Moto2 class, riding for his father’s team on board the Pons Kalex machine, and he enters his third campaign in the category in 2012, hoping for better luck after suffering from several serious injuries during his world championship career so far.
