Simon and Fores back to work on team’s home circuit

Together with the 125cc riders, many Moto2 teams started their first day of the 2011 on the Valencia circuit yesterday. The track is open from ten to five, with all riders out together until 3 PM after which both classes each had an hour of solo track time. The demand to these tests provided by IRTA has been massive. Although they are not official, as the Moto2 bike do not run with the official engines and therefore no official timing can be one. In any case it is a good opportunity to identify a definitive lineup for the first race in Qatar in mid-March.

Current Moto2 runner-up, Mapfre rider Julian Simon returned to the circuit where he said Goodbye to his Suter last season, testing the new chassis. His main task during the time on track has basically been the development work for the frame. The feel for the bike has been very positive and the Villacañas native managed to posted the fastest laptime, but he preferred not to ride in the afternoon session in order to rest, struggling with a high fever.
In contrast to Julian, his teammate Xavi Forés did more laps in the afternoon session than in the morning. Around noon he suffered an engine problem that banned him to the box until the afternoon. Fortunately the quick work of his mechanics enabled him to return to track in the last session of the day and at least he managed to do some laps and prepare the work for the second day of testing.

Julián Simón 1.37.00 (50 laps): “I am very happy because I finally returned to race on a circuit and I was eager to ride the Suter again. I found a good feeling right away and that is a good sign. I’ve seen that new bike works very well, although I could not take it to the limit because it was quite cold and the track was not in perfect condition. But already on the first day we came within a second of the laptime we achieved here in the last test in November. If things continue like this I think that the next two days of tests are going to be very positive. Especially if I get better physically. At noon I started to feel unwell with aching muscles because I had a slight fever. I decided not to go out in the afternoon session and I went to the hotel to rest.”

Xavi Forés 1.41.00 (38 laps): “”Of course we have not been able to work a lot. This morning when I had only done fifteen laps I had a problem with the engine that forced me to stay in the box until the afternoon round. Fortunately my mechanics did a great job and in the afternoon I could keep going. In the few laps that I completed today I had a good feeling and I think tomorrow when we start to work hard enough we will come closer to the laptime of the riders in front.”
