Pol Espargaro has started to see the light at the end of the tunnel at Estoril, scene of the Grand Prix of Portugal, where a great comeback and a sixth place finish felt like a podium for him and the team. After two races at the minimun in his Moto2 debut, Polyccio has taken a step forward and gained confidence for the future where he must continue working to narrow the gap to the front runners. The HP Tuenti rider did a bad start, losing up to ten positions and being only in 20th place in the first lap. After that he started an excellent comeback, with a pace only surpassed by the riders fighting for the podium which moved him to sixth place, taking his first points of the season and taking a lot of confidence for the next races. Pol Espargaro continues his adaptation to Moto2 this week on the Portuguese track with two private test sessions on Tuesday and Wednesday, to continue fixing problems and improving his competitiveness.

6. POL ESPARGARÓ: “I am very happy and value this sixth place like a podium. The comeback has been tough and at some point I couldn’t push with my arms anymore, so I took a slight break and then returned to attack. Also, in the first few laps I destroyed the tyres quite a bit and at the end of the race the bike was sliding a lot, but despite that I was able to do several laps in the 1.42s, like the three riders at the front, and passed four riders in three laps, Di Meglio, Baldolini, Rabat and Krummenacher. I knew I had a good pace and it was a shame to start so badly, both from the grid and in the first corner, where I didn’t want to risk anything and lost everything in a moment.

It was tough, but after hard work I start to really arrive in Moto2, a task where the team has helped me a lot and I’d like to thank them and also the sponsors of the project for not losing confidence me. In any case, it’s not all done now and we continue to push to make up the 25-second gap we had to the winner.

This week we will test for two days in Estoril and one of the tasks will be to improve the start and the first five laps, with new tyres, to avoid losing contact with the front in the first part of the race in a very tight category where any mistake can cost a lot.”
