Homework well done for Espargaro, Rabat and Pons

Pol Espargaró managed to post the fastest laptime at the end of the first IRTA test for the Moto2 class with a time of 1.35.4 after three days at the Circuit Ricardo Tormo in Valencia. Tito Rabat finished in 8th position with 1.36.3 while Axel Pons clocked a fastest time of 1.37.3 for 19th. All of them improved their speed each time they went out on track, completing an excellent start for the Pons 40 HP Tuenti Team in their first outing on track, two months before the championship will start at at the Losail circuit in Doha (Qatar). The next test will already be next week at the Jerez circuit.

POL ESPARGARÓ, 1.35.4 (61 laps): “This final day of testing went very well and little by little I improved my laptimes until I did a 1.35.4, much faster than ever on this track. The bike is in the development stage and although we don’t know all of its secrets yet, the margin for progress is considerable. We have to keep working and I want to thank the team for the effort they make at every moment to progress. In these tests you don’t get points or win races, but it gives you enormous confidence to keep working hard and keep gaining confidence before the start of the season.”

TITO RABAT, 1.36.3 (50 laps): “Around midday I had a crash which had me stuck waiting in the box for a long time. In the afternoon, with a repaired bike, I was able to ride again and improve my laptime and I still had the good feeling I had from the first day with the Pons Kalex. On this third day in Cheste I wasn’t able to work as I would have liked, but we are on a good way and I am certain that we will have a great year. What still needs improvement is that I lack confidence with the front, but I’m confident we will fix that shortly and improve considerably.”

AXEL PONS, 1.37.3 (58 laps): “Today I went out to improve my laptimes and self esteem and gain confidence, which is not easy after having had a crash like the one I had last October in Malaysia. It’s still difficult to be inside the times that I would like to be in, but we have six days of testing, two of three in Jerez, and I’m confident I’ll go to Qatar in good shape. These three days have been good for me to gain confidence and get back the feeling of riding a Grand Prix bike.”

SITO PONS, Team Manager: “The first official IRTA tests of Moto2 in 2012 have been very positive and we go back home with the feeling of having done our homework properly. Pol, Tito and Axel have improved their laptimes every day and all three have been faster than last year. Now we will have some rest and prepare for the next three days of testing, in less than a week in Jerez. I have complete confidence in this project and at this moment I can’t think why we shouldn’t be able to fight for the win in each race as well as for the championship.”
