Espargaro concludes preseason dominance with fastest time at Jerez
Pol Espargaró concluded the preseason with the fastest laptime at the Jerez circuit, just as he has previously done at the same track and at Valencia, showing that he is the rider in best shape ahead of the start of the 2013 championship.
Tito Rabat in sixth and Axel Pons in 12th also showed their potential and the great form of the Tuenti HP 40 Team at the moment, only two weeks before the first race of the season at Qatar on April 7th.
The wind was the main protagonist on the fourth and final day of testing, making it impossible for the riders to improve their laptimes. Despite this, Polyccio returned to lead the timesheets with Tito in third and Axel 15th.
1. POL ESPARGARÓ, 1.42.636 “On this final day I posted the fastest laptime again, but slower than yesterday because of the strong wind which hampered everyone a lot. I’m happy to have been the fastest in the three IRTA tests, one in Valencia and two in Jerez, but I know full well that you don’t get any points here and that the real championship starts in two weeks in Qatar.
I think we’re prepared to fight for the title, taking on that label of title favourite that everyone gives us, and with the confidence and calm of having the best technical team behind us to achieve this goal. You have to take it race by race and never forget that Moto2 is the toughest class and the races the hardest of the championship and that riders like Lüthi, Simon, Terol or Elias are already champions and that others like Redding have the means to make life difficult if we don’t use 110% of our potential.”
6. TITO RABAT, 1.43.424 “I think I’m better prepared than ever to start the season after always staying with the fastest guys during the three tests this winter. The team did a magnificent job and I think that together we found the way to fight for the front positions in all races, starting with Qatar in two weeks. Today the wind affected us all, but despite the conditions I was third and over all four days I was sixth. I’m happy and eager to get on the first grid of the year before the racing starts.”
12. AXEL PONS, 1.43.861 “On this fourth day of testing we made a few changes and we had to return to the previous setup, because it didn’t give us the expected results. I ended this long test in 12th position, always fighting to be among the Top 10 and with a good feeling on the bike. I can’t wait to go to Qatar and start racing, comparing my strengths to the other riders and showing that I made a big step forward and I hope this will continue throughout the whole season.”
