Espargaro and Rabat continue strong form at Qatar, Pons limited to four laps in tricky conditions
Rain and wind were the main influences on the second day of practice for the Qatar Grand Prix in Losail, affecting the riders of Team Tuenti HP 40 who weren’t able to improve their laptimes from yesterday, but could keep up their speed to stick with the front group.
Pol Espargaró eventually finished with the second-fastest time of the day with Tito Rabat in fourth and Axel Pons in 17th.
2. POL ESPARGARÓ, 2.01.565 “It’s funny that it rained in the desert, although this is not the first time. Basically we lost the whole practice, because I couldn’t do any long runs or use any of the few new tyres we got. Every time we went out on track it started to rain and then the track was impossible. I thinnk we made a step forward with the bike setup and tomorrow we can fight for the pole position, although I never really liked this circuit and didn’t get good results here.”
4. TITO RABAT, 2.02,272 “It’s been a difficult day with the track in tricky conditions and a lot of wind. Despite all that we have to be positive and take the appropriate conclusions, although there aren’t many. I can take away that I continued to be at the front in these conditions which last year affected us a lot and we usually finished far behind. We have to keep working for the qualifying tomorrow and I’m confident I can stay with the front guys.”
17. AXEL PONS, 2.03.449 “It’s a bit disappointing to be a whole day at the track to only do four laps, we only had one session and it started to rain three times and the track was very dangerous. I hope tomorrow everything will go better, although I would have preferred to get some conclusions from the things we did but we didn’t have the time to find any solutions.”
