Maverick Viñales puts Team Calvo on front row at Qatar

The riders of Team Calvo delivered a great performance during qualifying. Just like Maverick said in the past days, he wanted to save himself for the most important moments of this weekend, and that’s what he did. The rider of Team Calvo closed the gap to the pole setter to one tenth and today he’ll start as second on the grid into the first race of the 2013 season.

This result is worth even more when taking into account that Viñales is riding with an injury to the ring finger of his right hand. Before the race, Maverick and the team will decide together with Dr Mir if he needs an injection to reduce the pain during the race. But whatever the decision, Maverick and Team Calvo will give their maximum to fight for the best possible result.

Maverick’s team mate Ana Carrasco improved her best lap time from the free practice sessions by almost 3 seconds and she’ll start her first GP from row 8 of the grid. Her aim will be to finish the race and to gain valuable experience.

The championship is long but each race is very important. I believe we’ve done some great work and together with the team we’ve planned the practice perfectly. I surprised myself that I was able to set this time with my injured hand. But I’m very happy that I’m here and that I’ll be starting from the second position. Obviously the finger will hinder me during the race, but once the adrenaline starts flowing, it’ll hurt less. We’ve got a good pace and I can’t wait for the race to start.

We’ve been working a lot since Friday and the team has given everything to help me. The result is that we set quicker times and will start from higher up in the grid. The goal for the race is primarily to finish it, because you should always finish your first race. But I’ll try everything I can and if I can overtake anyone I sure will. I want to enjoy myself out there because it’ll be my first GP and that’s something I’ll never forget. And surely, learning a lot by watching the other riders will help me a in the following races.

It’s the first qualifying we did, and with Maverick’s injured finger we can surely be very satisfied with his second position on the grid. Ana pulled herself up after the little low on Friday and showed a great performance during qualifying. The race will be very hard for Maverick, there are many laps and we hope the injury won’t cause him too much pain. But I’m sure if he has the chance to fight for the top, he’ll do just that. For Ana, the main aim is to finish her first race in the Moto3 world championship.
