Viñales happy with strong start to Indianapolis weekend

 In Maverick Vinales, Moto3, News

Maverick Viñales and Team Calvo have had a very strong start to the Indianapolis GP. In the morning, the rider from Roses was always amongst the fastest riders, despite the track conditions not being the best and the session being interrupted by rain.
And in the afternoon Maverick could top the timesheet and posted a lap time better than last year’s pole position time. He hopes that tomorrow he’ll be able to improve even further to secure a start from the first line of the grid.

Maverick’s team mate Ana Carrasco suffered a crash in the morning that made her miss the remainder of the session, but during the second free practice the Team Calvo rider learned the circuit quickly and improved her feeling on the bike.

The GP got off to a very good start. We knew this circuit suits us and that’s why we’ve been expecting a lot. I’m happy because we worked really well and we’ve had a good setting right from the first time we went out on track. During the tests we did this summer we tried a lot of things that really helped us here and this really pushed my motivation even more. At the moment the entire first day has gone really well, we’re at the front and our closest rivals have more problems, but the weekend is still long and we have to remain focused.

The crash this morning was a big set-back because, even though I didn’t hurt myself, we lost the whole session repairing the bike, and at a new circuit it’s always important to get as many laps in as possible on the first day. But even so, I believe in the afternoon I was able to post a good time given that it was my first session. Surely there is a lot of room for improvement on the setup and also with regards to my style of riding as this circuit is one of the most complicated that we’re visiting this year. It’s got very fast corners that I like but also very slow ones that I’m not too keen on.

I believe we have to be satisfied with how the first day has gone. This GP is the start of the second half of the Championship and the more important one, because now things will start to really get decided. I see that Maverick is very strong, very committed and motivated and this is very noticeable out on track as we’ve seen today. Ana had a crash in the morning and only did one lap, but in the afternoon, after having missed one practice session, she’s done really well. She has to keep progressing, little by little.
